Lockerbie Bombing
The Lockerbie Bombing refers to the terrorist attack on December 21, 1988, when Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed by a bomb over the town of Lockerbie, Scotland. The explosion killed all 259 people on board and 11 residents on the ground, making it one of the deadliest terrorist acts in aviation history.
The investigation revealed that the bomb was planted by members of the Libyan government, leading to international tensions. In 2001, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer, was convicted for his role in the bombing, although he maintained his innocence until his death in 2012.
