Leonard Casley
Leonard Casley, also known as Prince Leonard, is an Australian farmer who declared his property, the Principality of Hutt River, an independent micronation in 1970. He made this declaration in response to disputes with the Australian government over wheat production quotas. Casley styled himself as the prince and established a unique identity for his micronation, which attracted attention and visitors over the years.
The Principality of Hutt River was located in Western Australia and operated for over four decades before officially closing in 2020. During its existence, it issued its own currency, stamps, and passports, creating a distinct cultural and political identity. Casley's actions sparked discussions about sovereignty and self-determination in the context of small nations.
