Lekwungen
The term "Lekwungen" refers to the Indigenous peoples of the southern Vancouver Island region in British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the larger Coast Salish cultural group and have a rich history that includes traditional practices, languages, and governance systems. The Lekwungen people are known for their deep connection to the land and waters of their territory, which includes the area around present-day Victoria.
The Lekwungen language, also known as Lekwungen or Songhees, is part of the Salishan language family. Efforts are ongoing to revitalize this language and preserve the cultural heritage of the Lekwungen people. Today, they continue to engage in cultural practices, community events, and collaborations with local organizations to promote their history and traditions.
