Lateral Rectus Muscle
The Lateral Rectus Muscle is one of the six extraocular muscles responsible for eye movement. It is located on the outer side of the eye and primarily functions to move the eye outward, away from the nose. This muscle is controlled by the abducens nerve, also known as cranial nerve VI.
When the lateral rectus muscle contracts, it allows for lateral gaze, enabling a person to look to the side. Dysfunction or weakness in this muscle can lead to conditions such as strabismus, where the eyes do not properly align, affecting vision and depth perception.
