Lake Natron
Lake Natron is a salt and soda lake located in northern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. It is known for its striking red and orange colors, which are caused by the presence of salt-loving microorganisms and algae. The lake's high alkalinity, with a pH level that can reach up to 12, makes it inhospitable for most aquatic life.
Despite its harsh conditions, Lake Natron is a vital breeding ground for the lesser flamingo, which thrives in its waters. The lake's unique ecosystem supports these birds, as they feed on the abundant algae. The surrounding landscape features stunning volcanic formations, including Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano nearby.
