Kinky Hair Syndrome
Kinky Hair Syndrome, also known as KHS, is a rare genetic condition that affects the structure of hair. Individuals with this syndrome typically have tightly coiled, dry, and fragile hair that is difficult to manage. The condition is caused by mutations in the KRT17 gene, which plays a crucial role in hair follicle development.
In addition to hair texture, Kinky Hair Syndrome can be associated with other symptoms, such as keratoderma (thickened skin on the palms and soles) and nail abnormalities. Diagnosis is usually made through clinical evaluation and genetic testing, and while there is no cure, treatments focus on managing symptoms and improving hair health.
