Kingdom of Ndongo
The Kingdom of Ndongo was a prominent African kingdom located in what is now northern Angola. It flourished from the late 15th century until the 17th century and was known for its rich culture and strong political structure. The kingdom was ruled by the Ngola, a title that later inspired the name of the country Angola.
The Ndongo people engaged in agriculture, trade, and skilled craftsmanship. They were also involved in the transatlantic slave trade, which significantly impacted their society. The kingdom faced challenges from the expanding Portuguese Empire, leading to conflicts that ultimately contributed to its decline.
