King José I
King José I was the King of Portugal from 1750 until his death in 1777. He was born on June 6, 1714, and became king after the death of his father, King João V. His reign is noted for significant events, including the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which led to major changes in urban planning and architecture in Lisbon.
During his rule, King José I relied heavily on his prime minister, Marquês de Pombal, who implemented various reforms aimed at modernizing Portugal's economy and administration. These reforms included the promotion of trade, the establishment of new industries, and the improvement of education, which helped shape the future of the nation.
