King Afonso II of León
King Afonso II of León was a medieval monarch who ruled from 1188 to 1214. He was the son of Ferdinand II of León and Urraca of Portugal. Afonso II is known for his efforts to strengthen the kingdom and for his involvement in the political dynamics of the Iberian Peninsula during the Reconquista, a period of conflict between Christian and Muslim states.
During his reign, Afonso II faced challenges from both internal factions and external threats. He worked to consolidate power and maintain stability in his realm. His reign is also marked by the promotion of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, which played a significant role in the cultural and religious life of medieval Spain.
