Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus
Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also known as human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), is a virus that belongs to the herpesvirus family. It is primarily linked to Kaposi's sarcoma, a type of cancer that often affects individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS. KSHV can also cause other diseases, including primary effusion lymphoma and multicentric Castleman disease.
KSHV is transmitted through saliva and sexual contact, and it can remain dormant in the body for long periods. In immunocompromised individuals, the virus can reactivate, leading to the development of associated cancers. Early detection and treatment are crucial for managing the complications related to KSHV infections.
