Kahikatea
Kahikatea, also known as Dacrycarpus dacrydioides, is a tall coniferous tree native to New Zealand. It can grow up to 66 meters high, making it one of the tallest trees in the country. Kahikatea trees thrive in wet, swampy areas and are often found in lowland forests. Their distinctive white bark and needle-like leaves help them adapt to their environment.
The wood of the Kahikatea is lightweight and resistant to decay, making it valuable for construction and furniture. This tree plays a crucial role in its ecosystem, providing habitat for various bird species, including the Kaka and Tui. Its seeds are also an important food source for native wildlife.
