John Walker Lindh is an American who became known as the "American Taliban" after he was captured in Afghanistan in 2001. He was born on February 9, 1981, in Washington, D.C., and converted to Islam in his teenage years. Lindh traveled to Afghanistan to join the Taliban during the U.S. invasion following the September 11 attacks.
After his capture, Lindh was charged with several offenses, including providing support to a terrorist organization. In 2002, he pleaded guilty to a single charge of supplying services to the Taliban and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. His case raised significant discussions about terrorism, civil liberties, and the treatment of prisoners.
