John Ross
John Ross was a prominent leader of the Cherokee Nation during the 19th century. Born in 1790, he played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of the Cherokee people, especially during the difficult period of forced removal known as the Trail of Tears. Ross was of mixed heritage, which helped him navigate both Native American and European American societies.
As a chief, Ross worked tirelessly to secure land and legal rights for the Cherokee. He was instrumental in negotiating treaties with the U.S. government, although many of these agreements were often violated. His leadership and resilience have made him a significant figure in American Indian history.
