American Indian history
American Indian history encompasses the diverse experiences and cultures of the indigenous peoples of North America. Before European contact, various tribes, such as the Navajo, Sioux, and Iroquois, developed rich traditions, languages, and social structures. They thrived in different environments, from the forests of the Northeast to the plains of the Midwest and the deserts of the Southwest.
The arrival of Europeans in the 15th century led to significant changes, including colonization, displacement, and conflict. Treaties, often broken, were made with the U.S. government, leading to the forced removal of tribes from their ancestral lands, exemplified by events like the Trail of Tears. Despite these challenges, American Indian communities continue to preserve their cultures and advocate for their rights today.
