John Lothrop Motley
John Lothrop Motley was an American historian, diplomat, and author, best known for his work on the history of the Dutch Republic. Born on April 15, 1814, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard University and later became a prominent figure in the literary and political circles of his time.
Motley's most famous work, "The Rise of the Dutch Republic," published in 1856, received critical acclaim for its detailed analysis of the Netherlands during the 16th century.
