John Hinckley
John Hinckley is best known for his attempted assassination of U.S. President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981. He shot Reagan and three others outside a hotel in Washington, D.C., in an effort to impress actress Jodie Foster, with whom he had an obsession. Hinckley was arrested and later found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Following his trial, Hinckley was committed to a psychiatric hospital for over three decades. In 2016, a judge granted him unconditional release, citing his improved mental health. His case raised significant discussions about mental illness, gun control, and the legal standards for insanity defenses.
