John Devoy
John Devoy was an Irish nationalist and a prominent figure in the movement for Irish independence. Born in 1842 in County Kildare, he became involved in revolutionary activities at a young age. Devoy was a key member of the Fenian Brotherhood, an organization dedicated to the establishment of an independent Irish Republic. After being imprisoned for his activities, he emigrated to the United States, where he continued to advocate for Irish freedom.
In America, Devoy played a significant role in fundraising and organizing support for the Irish nationalist cause. He was instrumental in the planning of the Daring Raid on Canada in 1870, which aimed to draw British forces away from Ireland. Devoy's efforts helped to maintain the momentum of the Irish independence movement, and he remained active in politics until his death in 1928.
