Johannes Liechtenauer
Johannes Liechtenauer was a 14th-century German fencing master known for his influential teachings on the art of combat. He is best recognized for developing a comprehensive system of German longsword techniques, which became the foundation for many later martial arts in Europe. His work emphasized principles of timing, distance, and the use of various techniques in combat.
Liechtenauer's teachings were recorded in a series of verses known as the Zettel, which served as a mnemonic device for students. His system was further elaborated upon by later masters, such as Sigmund Ringeck and Johannes Georgius, ensuring that his methods remained relevant in the study of historical European martial arts.
