Jodo Shu
Jodo Shu is a school of Pure Land Buddhism that originated in Japan during the 12th century. Founded by Honen, it emphasizes the practice of chanting the nembutsu, which is the invocation of the name of Amitabha Buddha. Followers believe that by sincerely reciting this name, they can attain rebirth in the Pure Land, a realm of enlightenment.
The teachings of Jodo Shu focus on faith and devotion rather than complex rituals or meditation practices. This approach made Buddhism more accessible to the common people, leading to its widespread popularity in Japan. Today, Jodo Shu continues to be an influential tradition within Japanese Buddhism.
