Jean de la Valette
Jean de la Valette was a French nobleman and military leader, best known for his role as the Grand Master of the Order of Saint John during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Born in 1494, he became a prominent figure in defending the island against the Ottoman Empire. His leadership and strategic skills were crucial in rallying the defenders and organizing the resistance.
Under de la Valette's command, the Knights of Saint John successfully repelled the Ottoman forces, which significantly boosted European morale against the empire. After the siege, he oversaw the reconstruction of Valletta, the capital city of Malta, which was named in his honor. He died in 1568, leaving a legacy of bravery and resilience.
