James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray
James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray (c. 1531–1570), was a Scottish nobleman and a prominent figure during the turbulent times of the {Scottish Reformation}. He was the illegitimate son of {James V of Scotland} and became a key supporter of the {Protestant Reformation} in Scotland. In 1567, he was appointed regent for his half-sister, {Mary, Queen of Scots}, after her abdication.
As regent, Moray faced significant challenges, including opposition from {Mary's supporters} and ongoing conflicts with the {Catholic Church}. His leadership was marked by efforts to stabilize Scotland and promote Protestantism. Moray was assassinated in 1570, which further intensified the political turmoil in the country.
