Jadidism
Jadidism is a reform movement that emerged in the late 19th century among the Muslim communities of the Russian Empire, particularly in Central Asia. It aimed to modernize education and promote a more progressive interpretation of Islam by incorporating secular subjects into the curriculum. Jadidists sought to empower their communities through knowledge and social reform.
The movement was characterized by the establishment of new schools, known as madrasas, which emphasized critical thinking and modern sciences. Prominent figures in Jadidism included Ismail Gasprinski, who advocated for cultural and linguistic unity among Turkic peoples. Jadidism played a significant role in shaping modern Central Asian identity and nationalism.
