Isthmus of Tehuantepec
The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is a narrow strip of land in southern Mexico, connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. It is approximately 200 kilometers long and serves as a natural land bridge between the two bodies of water. This region is significant for trade and transportation, as it offers a shorter route for shipping between the east and west coasts of Mexico.
The isthmus is home to diverse ecosystems and various indigenous communities, including the Zapotecs and Mixtecs. The area has been historically important for trade routes and has seen various infrastructure projects, such as the Trans-Isthmus Corridor, aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic development.
