Instant-Runoff Voting (IRV) is an electoral system that allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. Instead of choosing just one candidate, voters can indicate their first, second, and third choices. This method helps ensure that the winning candidate has broad support, as it takes into account voters' preferences beyond their top choice.
In an IRV election, if no candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. Voters who selected that candidate as their first choice then have their votes transferred to their next preferred candidate. This process continues until a candidate achieves a majority.
