The Ingenuity helicopter is a small, autonomous drone developed by NASA to explore the surface of Mars. Launched with the Perseverance rover in 2020, it is designed to demonstrate powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere. Weighing about 1.8 kilograms (4 pounds), Ingenuity has a rotor diameter of 1.2 meters (4 feet) and can fly at altitudes of up to 5 meters (16 feet) for about 90 seconds.
Ingenuity's primary mission is to test flight capabilities, but it has also provided valuable aerial images and data to assist the Perseverance rover in its exploration. The helicopter has successfully completed multiple flights, showcasing the potential for future aerial exploration on other planets.
