Indian South Africans
Indian South Africans are individuals of Indian descent living in South Africa. They primarily trace their roots to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when many Indians were brought to the country as indentured laborers to work on sugar plantations in Natal. Over time, they established vibrant communities, contributing significantly to the cultural and economic landscape of South Africa.
Today, Indian South Africans are an integral part of the nation’s diverse society. They celebrate various cultural festivals, such as Diwali and Holi, and have made notable contributions in fields like business, politics, and the arts. Prominent figures include Mahatma Gandhi, who began his activism in South Africa, and Nadine Gordimer, a Nobel Prize-winning author.
