Independent Set
An Independent Set in graph theory is a collection of vertices in a graph, such that no two vertices in the set are adjacent. This means that there are no edges connecting any pair of vertices within the set. Independent sets are important in various applications, including scheduling problems and network theory, where certain tasks or nodes must operate without interference.
Finding the largest independent set in a graph is a well-known problem in computer science, often referred to as the Maximum Independent Set Problem. This problem is classified as NP-hard, meaning that there is no known efficient algorithm to solve it for all graphs. Researchers often use approximation algorithms or heuristics to find large independent sets in practical scenarios.
