Inês de Castro was a Portuguese noblewoman born in 1325, known for her tragic love story with Prince Pedro I of Portugal. She became the mistress of Pedro while he was still married to another woman. Their relationship faced significant opposition, particularly from Pedro's father, King Afonso IV of Portugal, who disapproved of Inês.
After Inês was murdered in 1355 on the orders of Afonso IV, Pedro became king and sought to avenge her death. He famously declared her his queen posthumously, ordering her to be crowned and demanding that her remains be treated with honor. This story has become a symbol of romantic devotion in Portuguese history.
