Iliotibial Band
The Iliotibial Band (IT band) is a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the outer thigh, extending from the hip to the knee. It plays a crucial role in stabilizing the knee during movement, especially in activities like running and walking. The IT band helps maintain proper alignment of the knee joint and supports the muscles of the thigh.
Injuries to the IT band, such as Iliotibial Band Syndrome, can occur due to overuse or improper biomechanics. This condition often results in pain on the outer side of the knee and is common among athletes, particularly runners. Stretching and strengthening exercises can help prevent and treat IT band issues.
