Ileal Conduit
An ileal conduit is a surgical procedure that creates a new pathway for urine to exit the body. It involves using a small section of the ileum, which is part of the small intestine, to form a conduit. This is often done after the removal of the bladder due to conditions like cancer or severe injury.
In this procedure, the ureters, which carry urine from the kidneys, are attached to the ileal segment. The other end of the ileal conduit is brought out through the abdominal wall, creating a stoma. Urine then drains into an external collection bag, allowing for the management of urinary function.
