Icelandic Christmas traditions
Icelandic Christmas traditions are rich and unique, centered around the celebration of Yule. The festivities begin on December 12th, when the Yule Lads, 13 mischievous trolls, start visiting homes, leaving gifts for children. Each night, a different Lad arrives, and children place their shoes in the window to receive treats or potatoes, depending on their behavior.
Another important aspect of Icelandic Christmas is the Jólakötturinn, or Yule Cat, a giant feline that roams the countryside. It is said that those who do not receive new clothes by Christmas Eve risk being eaten by the Yule Cat. Families often gather to enjoy traditional foods and exchange gifts, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.
