Hurons
The Hurons, also known as the Huron-Wendat, are a Native American people originally from the region around the Great Lakes in North America. They were known for their agricultural practices, particularly the cultivation of crops like corn, beans, and squash, often referred to as the "Three Sisters." The Hurons lived in longhouses and formed a confederacy of several tribes, which helped them maintain social and political organization.
Historically, the Hurons had significant interactions with European explorers and traders, particularly the French in the 17th century. They played a crucial role in the fur trade, establishing alliances and trade networks. However, the arrival of Europeans also brought diseases that devastated their population, leading to significant changes in their society and way of life.
