Homestake Gold Mine
The Homestake Gold Mine is located in Lead, South Dakota and was one of the largest and deepest gold mines in the United States. It operated from 1876 until 2002, producing over 40 million ounces of gold during its lifetime. The mine played a significant role in the economic development of the region.
After its closure, the site was repurposed for scientific research. In 2003, it became the location of the Homestake Mine Underground Laboratory, which focuses on neutrino and dark matter research. The mine's rich history and ongoing scientific contributions make it an important landmark in both mining and physics.
