High Altitude Mummies
High altitude mummies are ancient human remains found in high mountain regions, particularly in the Andes of South America. These mummies are often well-preserved due to the cold, dry conditions at high elevations, which slow down the decomposition process. Many of these mummies date back to the Inca civilization and were often discovered in burial sites or as offerings to the gods.
The most famous high altitude mummies include the Llullaillaco mummies, discovered on the summit of Llullaillaco Volcano in 1999. These mummies, which include a young girl and two children, were part of a ritual sacrifice known as capacocha. Their preservation provides valuable insights into the cultural practices and lifestyles of ancient Andean societies.
