Llullaillaco mummies
The Llullaillaco mummies are three Inca mummies discovered in 1999 on the summit of Llullaillaco, a volcano located on the border between Chile and Argentina. These mummies date back to around 500 years ago and are notable for their excellent preservation due to the extreme cold and dry conditions at high altitudes.
The mummies are believed to be sacrificial offerings, part of the Inca practice known as capacocha. This ritual involved the sacrifice of children, who were chosen for their purity and beauty, to appease the gods. The discovery of the mummies has provided valuable insights into Inca culture and their religious practices.
