Llullaillaco Volcano
The Llullaillaco Volcano is a stratovolcano located on the border between Chile and Argentina. It stands at an elevation of 6,739 meters (22,110 feet), making it one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. The volcano is part of the Andes mountain range and is known for its well-preserved summit, which features several lava domes and a large crater.
Llullaillaco is notable for its archaeological significance, as it is home to the Llullaillaco mummies, discovered in 1999. These mummies are among the highest archaeological finds in the world, providing valuable insights into the Inca civilization. The volcano's remote location and harsh climate have helped preserve these ancient remains.
