Hereditary Hemochromatosis
Hereditary Hemochromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes the body to absorb too much iron from food. This excess iron can accumulate in various organs, particularly the liver, heart, and pancreas, leading to serious health issues such as liver disease, diabetes, and heart problems. It is often caused by mutations in the HFE gene.
Symptoms may include fatigue, joint pain, and abdominal discomfort, but many individuals may not show symptoms until later in life. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure iron levels and genetic testing. Treatment usually focuses on reducing iron levels through regular blood removal, known as phlebotomy.
