Hendra Virus
The Hendra Virus is a zoonotic virus that primarily affects horses and can be transmitted to humans. It was first identified in 1994 in Hendra, a suburb of Brisbane, Australia. The virus is carried by flying foxes, a type of bat, and can spread to horses through direct contact with infected bodily fluids.
In humans, the Hendra Virus can cause severe respiratory illness and neurological symptoms. While human infections are rare, they can be fatal. Preventive measures include monitoring horse health and minimizing contact with flying foxes to reduce the risk of transmission.
