Hemis is a small village located in the Ladakh region of northern India. It is known for its stunning landscapes, including mountains and valleys, and is situated at an altitude of about 3,600 meters (11,800 feet). The village is primarily inhabited by Buddhists and is famous for the annual Hemis Festival, which celebrates the birth of Guru Padmasambhava, a key figure in Tibetan Buddhism.
The Hemis Monastery, one of the largest and wealthiest monasteries in Ladakh, is located near the village. Founded in the 17th century, it houses a rich collection of artifacts, including ancient manuscripts and thangkas (Buddhist paintings). The monastery is an important center for Buddhist learning and attracts many visitors and pilgrims each year.
