Haylage
Haylage is a type of animal feed made from grass or legumes that are cut and fermented. It is typically harvested at a higher moisture content than traditional hay, which helps preserve the nutrients and flavor. The fermentation process creates an acidic environment that prevents spoilage, making haylage a popular choice for feeding livestock, especially horses and cattle.
To produce haylage, farmers cut the forage and then wrap it in plastic or store it in silos to keep out air. This method allows for a more nutritious feed option compared to dry hay, as it retains more vitamins and minerals. Haylage is often used in regions with high rainfall, where drying hay can be challenging.
