Hawaiian Monk Seal
The Hawaiian Monk Seal is a unique marine mammal found primarily in the waters of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It is one of the few seal species that live in tropical waters. Adult seals can weigh between 300 to 500 pounds and measure about 7 to 8 feet in length. They have a streamlined body, a short snout, and a thick layer of blubber for insulation.
These seals are known for their playful behavior and spend much of their time resting on beaches or swimming in the ocean. They primarily feed on fish, squid, and crustaceans. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is currently listed as endangered due to habitat loss, entanglement in fishing gear, and declining food sources.
