The Hanukkah Menorah, also known as a Hanukkiah, is a special candelabrum used during the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. It has nine branches: eight for each night of the holiday and one, called the shamash, used to light the others. The Menorah is typically placed in a window or doorway to publicize the miracle of Hanukkah.
During the eight nights of Hanukkah, a new candle is lit each evening, starting with one on the first night and adding an additional candle each subsequent night. The lighting of the Menorah commemorates the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days in the Temple after the Maccabees' victory.
