HFC-143a
HFC-143a, or 1,1,1-trifluoroethane, is a colorless gas commonly used as a refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. It belongs to the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) family, which are compounds that contain hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon. HFC-143a is known for its low ozone depletion potential, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative to older refrigerants like CFCs.
Despite its advantages, HFC-143a is a potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential. As a result, its use is being phased down in many countries under international agreements like the Montreal Protocol. Efforts are underway to find more sustainable alternatives to reduce its environmental impact.
