hydrofluorocarbon
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are a group of synthetic compounds used primarily as refrigerants in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. They are composed of hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon atoms. HFCs were introduced as alternatives to ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and are considered less harmful to the ozone layer.
Despite their benefits, HFCs are potent greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming. As a result, international agreements, such as the Montreal Protocol, aim to phase down their use. Many countries are exploring alternatives, including natural refrigerants and low-global warming potential (GWP) substances, to reduce environmental impact.
