HFC-134a
HFC-134a, also known as tetrafluoroethane, is a colorless gas commonly used as a refrigerant in air conditioning systems and refrigeration units. It is part of the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) family, which was developed to replace ozone-depleting substances like CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). HFC-134a has a low toxicity level and does not harm the ozone layer, making it a more environmentally friendly option.
Despite its advantages, HFC-134a is a potent greenhouse gas, contributing to climate change when released into the atmosphere. As a result, many countries are working to phase out HFCs in favor of more sustainable alternatives, such as hydrocarbons or HFOs (hydrofluoroolefins), which have a lower global warming potential.
