HCFC-22
HCFC-22, also known as chlorodifluoromethane, is a colorless gas commonly used as a refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. It belongs to the hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) family, which was developed as a less harmful alternative to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). HCFC-22 has been widely used due to its effective cooling properties.
However, HCFC-22 is considered an ozone-depleting substance, contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer. As a result, international agreements like the Montreal Protocol have aimed to phase out its use. Many countries are transitioning to more environmentally friendly refrigerants to reduce the impact on the atmosphere.
