Gurdwara Reform Movement
The Gurdwara Reform Movement emerged in the early 20th century in response to the management and practices of Sikh places of worship, known as Gurdwaras. This movement aimed to eliminate corruption, promote transparency, and ensure that Gurdwaras adhered to the teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.
Key figures in the movement included the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which was established to oversee Gurdwara management and protect Sikh interests. The movement also sought to empower the Sikh community by advocating for the rights of all Sikhs to participate in Gurdwara affairs, fostering a sense of unity and identity among followers.
