Gommateshwara
Gommateshwara is a colossal statue of the Jain deity Bahubali, located in Shravanabelagola, Karnataka, India. Standing at 58 feet tall, it is carved from a single block of granite and is one of the largest monolithic statues in the world. The statue represents the ideal of non-violence and renunciation, embodying the principles of Jainism.
The statue was commissioned in 981 AD by Chavundaraya, a general of the Ganga dynasty. It attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year, especially during the grand festival of Mahamastakabhisheka, where the statue is anointed with various substances. Gommateshwara is a significant symbol of Jain heritage and spirituality.
