Godfrey of Bouillon
Godfrey of Bouillon was a medieval knight and a key leader during the First Crusade, which took place from 1096 to 1099. Born around 1060 in what is now Belgium, he was a member of the noble House of Bouillon. Godfrey played a significant role in the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 and was known for his piety and military skill.
After the conquest of Jerusalem, Godfrey became its first ruler, taking the title of Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri, or Defender of the Holy Sepulchre. He refused the title of king, believing that only Christ should be king of Jerusalem. Godfrey's leadership helped establish the Crusader States in the region.
