Gitxsan People
The Gitxsan People are an Indigenous group located in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the larger First Nations community and have a rich cultural heritage that includes traditional practices, languages, and governance systems. The Gitxsan territory encompasses the upper Skeena River watershed, where they have lived for thousands of years.
The Gitxsan speak the Gitxsan language, which is part of the Tsimshianic language family. Their society is organized into clans and houses, each with its own unique history and responsibilities. The Gitxsan are known for their art, particularly in totem pole carving and weaving, which reflect their deep connection to the land and their ancestors.
